It's been bugging me for a while now about the amount of resources towns and cities (my town especially) spend on schools sports. My town just spent 25 million on the construction of a new football field. I saw nothing wrong with the old field across the street but I'll tell you most medium size colleges would love to have this new state of the art facility. On top of this my city of 60,000 has baseball and soccer fields all over and are still building expensive sports parks.
If you live in the USA you know how much emphasis is placed on high school sports especially American football. These student football players become elite celebrities among their peers. They are televised locally and the seriousness of the business is real. Football players get yelled and screamed at by coaches in a very military fashion. Highschool coaches here in Texas in a decent size school can easily make over $100,000 a year. When I was a kid it was your science or history teacher that coached sports for the enjoyment of it and maybe a few extra$. They were much more innocent times. Now I see these sports especially football as modern day Gladiator entertainment. One does not have to look deep into the cosmos for the dark side of things. It's right in front of you and intensifying.
Years ago I was talked into coaching a kids soccer team up in New England. I had played some indoor soccer so I had a bit of experience. This was a polite in-town league where all kids had to play at least 1/4 of the game. No bench per say. These kids were like 11-12 years old. We played a game against a team coached by a jerk of a man. He yelled at the kids and refused to play by the rules. His weaker kids never played. I wish I could remember his name but he would pace the sidelines like a madman yelling. Well my misfits surprisingly ended up with a one goal lead with several minutes left. Jerk had the better team but I had a plan to defeat monster coach. I took my most talented players and put them on defense. Just do not let them score I said. Just stop them and boot the ball down field lol. My team won and jerk coach was furious. That is not how it's done! I smiled put out my hand and he refused to shake it. Nothing against the kids who played on his team but I felt the good guys and girls won one lol. After that I never got involved again. Why would someone want to make it a war? Well I know why because there are good kids and bad kids and the bad kids like battle and war don't they?
