As in who we are, who we think we might be and in the end how real are we?
Most folks really believe themselves to be real. I did and you may have but is this actual reality? Not the body mind you but the person we think we are.
A short tale (tail? lol) in my young adult days (mid 70's) I was going nowhere really. Low end job, no relationships. A good friend of mine had moved from New England to Arizona as this person had a friend there. I was given an invitation to move there as there was an extra room with bath for rent. I decided to give it a try. Driving across 3/4 of the USA in 3 days. From the time of my invite to when I arrived things changed. The room was no longer available. Some hard core bikers with gang ties had moved in. Some of these folks were nuts. I had a gun put to my head by drunk insane biker. ( I slept with a loaded handgun under my pillow! Such serenity!)
My friend made this most wise observation. "If these folks did not have the personal identification of "Biker" They would then be just bums and losers." 40 years later I consider this to be an amazing reading of ego and unique understanding of the human condition.
Now we have Pete. He was the sweetest young guy. Came from a close Italian family in my neighborhood. Somewhere along the line Pete also caught biker fever and recreated himself. He liked to be seen with a joint in his mouth like he was posing for an Easy Rider photo shoot. To be honest this luvable guy became a total ass as his ego got the best of him. ( I did talk to Pete a few years ago on the phone and I am happy to report the "old Pete was back. His ego image did not hold up in his older years.)
One more. A guy at work. We will call him Abby. Spent his life in the military. He lives a civilian life now but still dresses in full military garb at work. Camo, the hat, boots and badges. It is all he knows how to be. Please understand these are in a sense false, ego identification images. What's wrong with these ID images is they are perceived by the individual to be real. They're not. They are fantasy, thought form images of what someone identifies with. People identify with racial or nationality images, political parties. job assignments, athlete, gender assignments, educational or even physical advancements. All the above are real as adjectives. They are not real as human identity.
We live in this level one existence. Some wise man 2000 years ago said. Be on the Earth but not of it. Being not of it for me is looking beyond ego identification. Level 2 is the beginning of realization that this world is in a sense fake because of this ego disease most suffer. Now since we have to live here one does need some sense of ID. Once one understands the above scenario they can then create a personality of their choosing to cope at this level understanding it is nothing more than an act. This is where the fun begins. Being one step ahead of the Matrix beings who think they are real.
