Have you guys ever had any encounter with sleep paralysis and have you been able to make out the reason such an occurrence happens??
I experienced sleep paralysis once like a year ago and it was the most frightening experience ever...I suddenly became totally aware of my room without physically waking up, there was this intense buzzing in my ears and my chest...like my chest was being pressed down super hard with brute force...i was heated up and felt like i was suffocating or something...and i definately couldn't move a muscle or my eyes...i was in the supine position (lying on back) and i could only see what's just infront of me...but here is the most frightening part, on the left side of my bed just close to my head a presence manifested, blurry but blackish... i could only make out the head figure and it made a sound...kind of like talking...but in an unknown language, with a deep screechy voice...i was super frightened...i could call out for "help" but the sound was just in my head...more like a thought... so after for what seemed like 20 minutes of torture i was released from this paralyzed state... i was sweating all over like crazy and got up and found the room exactly as i was seeing it in my sleep...i realised i was perceiving the whole incident although my eyes were completely shut... Anyway i've been puzzling over this ever since, i tried to google it and search everywhere for an explanation and only got two that are both equally convincing and at the same time unsatisfactory but at the same time antagonistic.
The first one is that it was a kundalini experience...Indeed it has symptoms of what would be called a kundalini experience of it burning impurities in a particular chakra..For one kundalini is a "hot" force by its nature, that's why you sometimes felt heated up hands or feet when in bed at night and had to leave them out of the covers or keep on repeatedly holding cold parts of the blanket...because there are chakras in the hands and feet corresponding to those aligned along the spinal column... So maybe when the kundalini reaches the heart chakra, it breaks it open because its a strong force and burns out everything in its path hence the sweating i was experiencing in that region.. and you feel that pressure, buzzing and a pseudo out of body experience because its maybe too intense...But then comes confusions, why would it happen only at that chakra? Why would i have to wake up like that? Why would i be numb? Why would i perceive that visible presence next to me (and most other people report those presences too)? Why would i be suffocating? The answers provided from the Eastern way of thought are that; You wake up because you're sinking in another dimension, like literally the "God/Absolute/Eternity principle" is trying to dissolve you into it...like loosing your ego (physical identification) of sorts...So that you can "die" and realise that nothing dies...you know a part of you has dissolved and temporarily seized to exist but "you" are still there...aware...but there is nothing else...so being afraid to "die" i.e the Ego, it fights back and that's why you keep fighting and shouting for help and so on...It's more like going into the same dimension people in a deep meditative state go in except this time the very thing that you're trying to reach on your own in meditation this time it's the one that has sought you...and it's frightening....and also neophytes doing deep meditation experience heating up and sweating, which also makes somehow this hypothesis valid.
The next explanation is of a demonic/ghost/earth bound ancestor/entity possession (30% of the world population is possessed if the statistics are right, i could have been or could be one those lol)...This is of two ways, first, that in that moment an entity that has been possessing you (without you being aware of it) for quite some time (maybe years or lifetimes) chooses to manifest like that to frighten you or with some other agenda idk... but then that would be detrimental to it, because then you'd be aware of it and seek some spiritual measures to detach it from you, if you're that dedicated anyway....Think of it like, if you certainly realise someone/something has been mind controlling you, you then start finding ways to break out of the slumber...So hear you see that becoming "aware" of something is detrimental to the person/being perpetrating that scheme against you.. So you becoming aware of it wouldn't be a good idea to it except if it maybe knows you as being weak and so it can frighten you however it wants to get what it wants done....maybe like what happens to the Elite...who knows.
Second way, during the process of awakening where your chakras are being purified by the kundalini rising and burning all impurities such as repressed emotions, traumas and whatnot, it burns out the entity as well, sort of like burns out its spot of attachment. Because it needs something to "hold onto" when possessing you...it needs to match you vibrationally, as in have the same repressed emotions as the ones you've repressed.. So yours act as entry points and attachment points for it...where it can further live out its desires through you, which definately match yours except that its are more heightened and carefree... Anyway as the divinely guided kundalini force burns those impurities out it slips off...you become technically slippery to it...like an oily glassware..it can't attach to you...and hence it becomes revealed to you as it detaches, sort of like during an exorcism a demonic possession surfaces as its weakening and the person acts out in a scary manner.
Anyway both are valid to me but i want to see how you guys take it...and maybe you have better explanations...

I know that Robert Monroe, of the Monroe Institute, mentions it as a precursor to OBE.
I’d had the feeling of energy coming in to me since I was a kid. Scared me too, most of the time. The last time I fought back and kept it away from me. Haven’t felt it since,
If it IS a matter of manifesting separationto reduce the fear of death... we’ll maybe I should sign up at the Monroe Institute too!

I had something similar happened to me in my early twenties when I first started exploring "psychic" studies. Actually, I was taking a couple of classes through the Berkeley Psychic Institute (I don't remember the class now -- it could have been Meditation or Healing). It was an actual attack in my case. I was about to drift into sleep, entering that twilight zone, when I sensed an energy coming into through the side window near my bed. I "saw" it drifting/floating in. My eyes were closed, and so I thought I was "dreaming" it. The energy was extremely dense, dark, and it really didn't have any definable shape to it. But it was definitely an entity of some sort. It crept up over my feet and then just sat on my chest, pressing down harder and harder as if it was trying to push through to my body. I don't remember being ever so frightened in my entire life, because I knew it was an "intelligent" entity trying to possess me. I remember somewhere inside my head I was screaming, but no sounds came out. I remember praying (to all the buddhas) while yelling at this creature to get the **** away from me. And then from out of nowhere, my cat Meowser jumped onto the bed and started to head-butt me and licking my face, and the creature vanished in an instance! (I loved that cat; she really was the best cat ever!)
The main difference (I think) between your experience and mine is that mine came from an external source -- it was definitely wandering around looking for a new host. I had a couple of similar experiences years later -- but by then I had already learned how to sense/see dark entities even while awake, and I could command them to leave my space. (Although it took a lot of courage and confidence in my abilities.)
I don't like to call them demonic because I don't necessarily think of them as "evil". I just think of them now as hungry aetheric leeches -- they need to feed, and warm human bodies are the easiest to attach to. It happens quite a lot actually, as you said. If you can see auras, you can see a dark/dense/muddy layer around a person. (But it could also be that the person is very ill). They can also attach to certain animals too.
My experience was definitely not a precursor to an OBE experience.

Sleep paralysis is the result of falling asleep in one position without moving for several hours. It is a great way for learning how to out-of-body travel. Wake up without physically moving and then concentrate your mind to THINKING of going somewhere. I first did it without much effort.

By the way Elisabeth, my mother did OBEs as well and lived into her late 90s.

Best wishes to you too, Elisabeth. The trick with OBEs is to empty and relax your mind. One beginning exercise is to lie down and start concentrating on relaxing your body as in...fingers, hand, right arm, left arm, ankle, etc. until you get to your breathing and even heartbeat. When you are in a condition similar to sleep paralysis, then you can attempt to leave your body.

When you are in a condition similar to sleep paralysis, then you can attempt to leave your body. I have done that numerous times. I would start with my feet and let the relaxation creep upward one area at a time till it reached the head. At the point I would feel like a bodiless mind. I remember once with a toothache it was a fine way to go beyond pain.
