Well the donors meant well.
VATICAN CITY—Every year, Catholics around the world donate tens of millions of dollars to the pope. Bishops exhort the faithful to support the weak and suffering through the pope’s main charitable appeal, called Peter’s Pence.
What the church doesn’t advertise is that most of that collection, worth more than €50 million ($55 million) annually, goes toward plugging the hole in the Vatican’s own administrative budget, while as little as 10% is spent on charitable works, according to people familiar with the funds.
From the Wall St Journal.

I use to donate many yrs ago. I give P20 (This is lower middle class man's donation) per week that is P80 per month or P1000 per year. I estimate that there are at least 25M that donates... most donate way more than i do. so that is at least P25,000,000,000 or $500,000,000 per year TAX FREE And that is not my point. The Catholic church does not force you to donate. its totally up to you. My office mate and a good friend is a born again christian They are mandated to give 10% of their earnings... gross earnings Another is a local Iglesia ni Kristo religion. also 10% if they dont give, they will go to hell. People should really wake up.

Organized religion has always been a racket. I'm sure the Poop could end world hunger in a heartbeat with all the wealth of the catholic church, even if it would ruin the church estates.
Anyway, it is the same with any charity that is "big enough". 95% "administrational" costs -> pure milk and honey for the thieves, 5-10% to the supposed charity to maintain a semblance of correctness.
People want to give money away, awesome, many people are generous, but they are taken advantage of, big surprise. Check as much as you can where the money goes. Best is to give directly somehow, that way you know it actually works.

Charities never work. Anyone with basic understanding of how this world works, knows that you can't fix structural problems by "paying" to hide them. But of course, nobody really wants to actually fix the problems. There is just one group of people that through the money and position, gain control (like the Catholics) and another group of people that just want to feel good about themselves by playing the "game of being good". It's called a polarity game. None of them really want to fix the issue, since then they will not be able to play their "games" any more. And while they seem to be different, they are all the same, which is why they attract in a sick way. It's interesting example, since most things on that planet work exactly the same...
