Well, I'm thinking how to waste a couple of decades of unwanted life. I generally hate to waste time, and I would rather kill myself... But this is not easy either, and there is some family to think about... Anyway, I need to have an alternative plan. My previous plan (to get myself into "busy work") was to create advanced 3d application. However: 1) it's too complicated for 99.99% to comprehend. Also most people today care only about entertainment. Even those that don't think so... What I found about human nature, is that any form of social life is all about entertainment. Including writing in forums, including posting comments anywhere... Most people don't realize it... until maybe when they are on the other end of the line, and finally get it - people judge you by how well you entertain them... 2) those that can comprehend my work, would rather push their own stuff or other things that immediately make them money. I'm just too alone to market this thing, especially today... 3) it's too much heavy lifting in one direction... So, I think making a game will avoid the issues above. What kind of game? I want to be a story about life and death. It will follow one day in the life of an average Joe. Which is mostly going to work, trying to survive out there. I have some basic ideas about casual mini-games based on the actual life. At the end of the day, misfortune strikes, and our Joe dies in a silly accident. Then he goes to heaven, only to be told "he is not ready yet", "there is so much more to learn in life"... Crap like that. Then he is thrown down into the Limbo, where he tries to survive and make sense of life, decide what to do... Needless to say, this is the part I have most problems designing. I don't want to impose particular vision, but at the same time, the game must be in the line of sarcastic/pessimistic. You decide if you want to take it seriously or not... I want to add some philosophical readings from librivox, but not to the extend of "The Witness" for example... Philosophers that I'm thinking about are Schopenhauer, Kant, Kierkegaard. Don't like modern stuff... Of course, it will be a bit difficult to find passages that are somehow self-contained, more general, easy to get, and allow some freedom of interpretation. There will be also walking in dark environments, maybe solving some puzzles (since life is supposed to be a puzzle, right). But again, the tough part is making the player realize something about life. What do you think? Also, found a "free" compositor I like (i.e. CC-BY license). Sounds exactly what I want the game to feel www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEIXANjFZnUMy target auditory are melancholics, weirdos and youtubers that want to show off weird games in a desperate attempt to look different and become popular...

Just some brain-crashing on my part: Tough part is to get people thinking, as you say. Different parts will trigger different people, people have different references. I think you should focus on what could have sparked you and go with that. Probably hit closer to home with more people that way. Trick is to juxtapose what you want to say with regards to what you are showing, so people can get this aha-moment or feeling of figuring something out, without it being obvious and seen coming from a mile away, they will already have ran past it and forgotten it and bored by it. Throwing in a few plot twists could be clever, but make sure the twists also follow a certain red thread so people don't get too confused, maybe even several layers of different, but inter-related stories, that's always popular. Less is more, though, so a tough balance is needed.
It's all about they story-telling, the individual parts and bits not so important, to the player at least; they can be entertained by most parts paired with most parts. Pick the philosophers which entice you and try and find the parts from each which can be related in some way to each other so you can keep a red thread. Symbolism is important, that means the landscape/backdrop should tie in with what you are trying to convey, without being descriptive only of a scene in isolation. People pick up on things without being conscious of them, so I'm not saying program people, but use their whole sensory apparatus to convey your story.
With the names you mentioned you should be able to get alot of good dark humour in there as well. A game does not need to be pretty or over-developed, it just needs to be playable, bug-free and have a good narrative or addictive gameplay.
Edit: you need to "impose" some sort of vision, simply because there needs to be a story, but as you say this may be a vision of gloomy pessimism and the protagonist may e.g. discover that all these philosophers are full of shit in some way, or being victims of their own imaginings or something, or that each of their stories doom one each of the other philosopher.
Edit2: "Well, I'm thinking how to waste a couple of decades of unwanted life" <-- put this in the game, you know, not this exactly, but the same feeling. Gloomy without being extreme with a good dose of dark humour, that is pretty relatable

Well, as always, the game I had in mind was just released by someone else... Story of my life. It's not exactly like I imagined it, but close enough. The character "dies" only at the end, and it's not really clear what kind of "rebirth" the authors had in mind. The game is called Mosaic, and it got pretty average (even bad) reviews overall... www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUCpV9226X4And this is where the idea of such games fails... It presupposes that the player has experienced life as more or less - a conscious being, so he/she can relate. It doesn't need to match exactly the author's vision, but still... there must be some overlap. This just won't happen for many, many people... They can't associate the game/story feeling with almost anything in their personal experience. It's something I've noticed when communicating with others. Many parts of a healthy person's brain are just missing in them. They may eventually get the concept intellectually, but it's not associated with any deeper awareness. How to explain... For example this game, Mosaic, is very well done artistically and it relates to our modern life. For example - the idea of the wage slave, the AI overlord, the soulless existence, the rebellion against the system. As a gameplay... there is nothing there, but as overall experience, they've hit the spot. But most people, just don't feel it... They say: - the ending is a cliche... Sure, this game is not about "plot twists", and "suspense", it's actually more realistic. And realism is really a cliche... Go complain to god for that. I have a better ending idea (but it's a secret ) - for 20 bucks they could eat whole day, but this game lasts only 2 hours... I guess such people will also never go to a gallery or a concert... Better stay home, watching kid's shows on youtube, eating chips... - they really can't make connection with their out life. For them, this is just a dark story of some pathetic guy... Even though the game tries to make it so relevant to what we e experience today. And I get it, to some extend. Most people just don't care. They try to live in their own small bubble and ignore everything else... They are affecting only by what happens to their ego, and have zero world view. I was really thinking that there aren't enough games or even movies about interaction with cosmic beings. IMO, people just can't imagine what they can be. It's either "Alien" like creatures (that try to eat you), or very human like ones, that just look different. But again, if they are realistic, most people would be not able to related to them... I personally consider myself an alien, and I can see the people's capacity to decode me is close to zero... Because of all these issues, I wanted to make it really like a game that doesn't look at itself seriously, so you can say that everything there is just full of shit. Although, of course, people that see it that way, would be vastly unintelligent. However this is most of the "market" out there, and they must somehow feel good about themselves in some way (and buy the game ). This is what Mosaic is missing. Capacity to "insult" the people they don't target as auditory, but in a way to make them auditory... This is the real "art" IMO, insulting somebody in a way, he can't get it, but starts to laugh with you, unable to understand that he is the one ultimately laughed at...
