In today's culture they teach you to put up an image for herd acceptance. Just think about the adage "Clothes make the man". Everything about this first cognition world is image generated and everyone's value or worth is measured through the eyes of the image, so it's all superficial. Your image does not state who you are. The self-image this world is talking about is an image of projection. Humans are like an actor. Think about it, once the actor leaves the scene, he isn't playing the character anymore. But people do, that's the difference. Humans live the image. They measure their self-worth according to the image they project.
True individuality is about becoming a cognitive free consciousness that doens't use culture and the eyes of others to measure who we are. We have our own value and we set our own value. To truly become an individual, you have to get past all of this image garnering acknowledgement by external sources. Moving into the second cognition and beyond takes you beyond having to live the image or using it to identify who we are.
Just as an example, I perceived lately that I still think and speak in terms of "I am Flemish" when I talk to other nationalities or even to french speaking people in Belgium. The Flemish (Dutch speaking) in Belgium used to be treated as inferior in the past and because of that a huge Flemish movement has originated since World War II and this is what has created the political instability in Belgium today and why so many Flemish are talking about confederalism, i.e. separating the political power between the french- and dutch speaking. Anyway, my father was a proud flemish and although this really doesn't make sense to me, I often perceive my ego trying to make me feel that same pride in me lol. Thinking in terms of nationality as an identity is precisely the same as thinking that clothes make you as a person for example.
